Conceptual Redesign
Orange County’s online calendar serves as a central source for public meetings, community programs, workshops, and local events. However, finding relevant information requires users to navigate a dense interface containing multiple navigation options, filters, links, and event listings
This concept explores how the calendar experience could be simplified to help residents quickly understand what is happening, find events relevant to them, and access important event details.
THE PROBLEM
Residents looking for local events are presented with a large amount of information at once, making it difficult to quickly identify what is relevant to them.
The opportunity is to create a clearer discovery experience that prioritizes search, filtering, event categories, and essential event information without removing access to the resources already available.
INFORMATION DENSITY
Multiple navigation options, resources, search controls, and event information compete for attention.
DISCOVERABILITY
Users need a faster way to narrow events based on what they are looking for.
SCANNABILITY
Important details such as date, time, location, and event type should be easier to identify while browsing.
EXPERIENCE AUDIT
NAVIGATION
Multiple government resources and calendar categories appear before users reach event discovery.
SEARCH & FILTERS
Date and keyword controls provide useful functionality but lack strong visual prominence within the overall page hierarchy.
EVENT LISTINGS
Event information is comprehensive, but long vertically stacked listings make browsing multiple events more demanding.
EVENT ACTIONS
Useful actions such as event details, reminders, calendar downloads, email sharing, and printing appear alongside each event.
key takeaway
the redesign opportunity is not to reduce access to information, but to reorganize it around the way residents search for and evaluate events.

DESIGN GOALS
01 MAKE DISCOVERY FASTER
Surface search, dates, and event categories as primary actions.
02 IMPROVE SCANNABILITY
Create a consistent event-card system that prioritizes date, title, category, time, and location.
03 PRESERVE ACCESS
Maintain access to the detailed public information and actions residents may need while creating a simpler browsing experience.
The proposed experience prioritizes event discovery before secondary information, creating a more direct path from browsing to event details.

THE SOLUTION
A redesigned event-discovery experience brings search, categories, filters, and upcoming events into a clearer visual hierarchy.
Rather than changing the information Orange County provides, the concept restructures how that information is presented, helping residents move from “What’s happening?” to the information they need with fewer distractions.
WIREFRAMES
Early wireframes focused on establishing a clearer information hierarchy for event discovery. The initial concept prioritizes search, event categories, filtering, and upcoming events to create a more direct entry point into the calendar experience.
The wireframes evolved alongside the experience. With each iteration, I focused on making events easier to discover, filters easier to understand, and important details easier to find.
01 Events Landing
Making discovery the starting point
The landing page brings event discovery forward with clear search and filtering options, allowing
users to begin exploring without first navigating through departments or separate calendars.

02 filter results
Keeping context while narrowing the search
Filters remain visible alongside the results, making it easier to understand what has been selected, adjust criteria,
and continue exploring without restarting the search.

03 Expanded result
Giving users more control when they need it
Additional filtering options are available without overwhelming the initial experience,
allowing users to narrow events by the details most relevant to them while keeping results in view.

04 Events details
Putting essential information first
The event page prioritizes the details users need to make a decision—what the event is, when and where it happens,
and how to attend, while keeping additional information easy to scan.

DESIGN DECISIONS
01 SEARCH FIRST
Search becomes a primary entry point, allowing residents who already know what they need to begin immediately.
02 CATEGORY-BASED DISCOVERY
Event categories provide an alternative path for residents who want to explore rather than search for a specific event.
03 SCANNABLE EVENT CARDS
Consistent cards establish a predictable hierarchy for dates, titles, times, locations, and event types.
04 PROGRESSIVE DETAIL
The browsing experience surfaces essential information first while preserving complete event information on dedicated detail pages.
EXPECTED IMPACT
FASTER DISCOVERY
A clearer hierarchy could reduce the effort required to find relevant events.
BETTER SCANNABILITY
Consistent event cards make dates, times, locations, and categories easier to compare.
CLEARER PATHS
Search, browsing, filtering, and event details become distinct parts of the experience.
The concept demonstrates how thoughtful information architecture and visual hierarchy can make public information feel more approachable without sacrificing access to detail.
